Two weeks remaining in the year and I achieved my running mileage goal for 2014. Regardless of how I count it, when I type it, it feels like a lot. An average of 11.4 miles a day, 80 miles a week, 4,000 + miles in total. It has been quite the journey……but what is THPL without big goals and crazy ideas? In the most interesting way it makes life better – living with a clear purpose, a focused mission, and a quest for fulfillment – they all feel good to have in one’s life.
I ask myself - was it easy, was it hard? For sure there were days with aches and pains, days when miles took longer than others, days when it was hard to run and when it would have been fun to do something else. None of it, though, got in the way of the goal. There was the unexpected – a change of jobs that would have me travelling 125,000 flight miles. The travel, for sure changed things and required a lot of creativity and commitment to run regardless of lack of sleep, location, or time of day – Choices, once again, made in support of the goal.
One more word that needs mention in this post – resiliency. It is a combination of physical, mental and emotional strength that when in balance allows you to work through and past normal obstacles and barriers on the way towards achievement. And so maybe, after all of the miles, that is my big thought – resiliency is the secret sauce – it the basic requirement to achieve big goals. It does feel good to be done and it gives me confidence to take on yet the next big goal….. seriously, what is THPL without big goals?
