Does it Count

There are many any instance on the THPL journey, and in life, even more broadly, when we are the arbiter of our own performance.  And with this responsibility comes accountability to a set of standards that need to be able to stand up to some kind of “scrutiny” even if there is no materiality to the outcome. For example, if you happened to be golfing and your last put came up a half inch short of the hole it is tempting to score it “in” based on some form of excuse, “I rushed it to keep play moving”.  But making our own rules for performance is a slippery slope.  The golf example is just one of many when we shift our measure to accommodate the outcome we want.  But if we are truly on a journey to high performance then this approach really is not helpful and we need to stay clear of creating convenient measures that have the appearance of progress but in fact are just false signals.   So today when I land in Abu Dhabi and have a three-hour lay over I am not going to add the UAE to my list of countries visited.  Visiting would require staying over night, seeing local sites, eating local food etc.  The idea that we have control over our performance and our accomplishments is liberating and exciting, let’s just make sure that we keep the THPL theme front and center and we will enjoy it when we really do make that put or visit the UAE.  Anything less would miss the point.
