For an ultra athlete, a long distance triathlon, a mountaineer, you learn quickly that your nutrition plan is as critical as the gear that you bring with you on your journey. All of the planning, training, and execution, can get compromised without the proper nutrition - and while intellectually it makes sense to eat properly, to eat at the right intervals, and to stay hydrated and “topped off” with calories there are many times that without the proper plan (and reminders) that you can put yourself at risk and make the challenge even harder. The easiest way to address the issue is to adopt rules before you start – eg. I am going to eat every hours – or I will eat these kinds of foods…. It is worth practicing before you go on an epic adventure.
