Each day that we embrace THPL we do so with intent and purpose. Sometimes that is directed towards ourselves, sometimes towards our community and sometimes towards others with whom we have engaged with for specific purpose. Today I had the opportunity to pace a friend in the NYC Marathon. The iconic event 26.2 miles through the streets and byways of NYC with millions cheering for every runner – a life-time experience for sure. Today, though, was to be for a friend, to target a sub four hour time, to give it the best we had and get to that finish line together. The best laid plans…ugh…..it was a challenging day, a hip flexor injury reared up and took all of the possible speed my buddy had and made every step a challenge and then some – 50,000 plus steps, each one straining his forward progress. And so the with original goal pushed aside, the finish line became the target and with that encouraging words to get us there and a race that became a battle instead of a ballet. THPL in full living color got us from mile one to twenty-six and the two of us pushed over the finish line with a sigh of relief and another marathon in the books. The extra time it took to get to the finish created an interesting challenge. Now it was time to get to the airport. My stuff five miles away and no transport in sight I took to the roads and ran as hard as I could to get the stuff, find an Uber and high-tail it to JFK. The extra running had purpose and so the usual recovery after such a race was postponed and put aside. THPL igniting a passion and setting the possible as probable. Yes, it all worked out, I am writing this from the airplane, a testament to making all of it happen, regardless of the original plan, by following the spirit of the moment and the commitment to a friend. With good intent and purpose all can end with a very good outcome.
