As we traverse the journey we call THPL we look for inspiration around us, we look for role models, ideas, just about anything that can show us what is possible or a better pathway forward. And the more we look the more we find. The iconic company Patagonia is an example of a “role model” company – they have in so many ways represented an ethic / approach that states explicitly that it should make products that are friendly to the world we live in. They donate time and money and take back products and replace them no matter what the reason. And for the longest time they thought that the fleece jackets they made were ok for the environment. True to their values, though, they decided to see if this was indeed true. What they found out did not please them. In fact the jackets (and the production process) are net adders to environmental waste. And from this they decided to figure a way to get better. Next in line to replace the synthetic fleece jackets is a simulated spider silk, whose fibers will be primarily made of sugar, water, yeast, and salts, as opposed to the petroleum used for most synthetics. These more environmentally sensitive practices make the next generation of jackets a natural fit for an eco-conscious brand like Patagonia and a true validation of what they stand for – even if it was hard to get there. Might we all take a lesson from what we think is happening, what really is happening and what we can do from there. Seems all might just be a bit better if we do this…….
