The four-minute mile

The man who did what no one thought was possible, Roger Bannister, passed away this past week at the age of 88.  He was an Oxford medical student when he ran the first sub-four-minute mile in 1954.  The New York Times declared, at the time, that he had reached “one of man’s hitherto unattainable goals” and his name has become known worldwide for this breakthrough accomplishment.  And in his doing he exemplified so much of what we believe to be true on our THPL journey.  That goals and limits are ever present in our lives and are temporal, they stand for reasons unknown and when they are surpassed we wonder why we were deterred by them.  The journey, is indeed here the magic happens and as Bannister stated, “Failure is as exciting to watch as success, provided the effort is absolutely genuine and complete”.  A year later, after thinking about his accomplishment and the following success in the sport of running he wrote, “the aim is to move with the greatest possible freedom toward the realization of the best within us. This is the quest of a lifetime, and sport plays only a small part in it”.  And so, it is – THPL our manifestation of how others like us think, have thought and have lived.  Human potential, limitless, and there for us to do with as we see fit for our journey…..

Loving life when I am inspired by others
