The Fourth of July serves as the starting off point for the country we call the United States of America. And it was on July 2nd, 1776 when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from the British and it was two days (July 4th) later that delegates from all 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence and the Fourth of July. A bold moment for sure when many of the colonists were not even sure it was a good idea. With the support of many strong and visionary leaders, we found the courage to become independent and set us on a pathway to what we now know is the leading democracy around the world. It is at moments like this when we are reminded that the changes we are working to make are just part of our DNA. Yes, we were, and still are fiercely independent, and we were progressive and bold and did things that have made a difference more than 200 years later. We have the opportunity to do something of equal magnitude at this moment. We can once again change the course of history and we are on the precipice of doing so. This battle is different though, and it starts with treating each and every one of our fellow Americans with respect and dignity. This approach will be the beginning of the support of all that we stand for and all of our fellow Americans – we are taking on the fight and it will be well worth it!
