It seems that we will always want to discover, explore, challenge, reach big, and do something harder than we have previously experienced. It can happen in any context and while we thought there were no extremes heretofore not conquered there are a four-groups who are in Pakistan attempting to do a winter summit of K2, the second tallest mountain in the world. The conditions, in winter, on K2 are brutal, 100 mph winds, -40degrees F, extreme climbing, and all while staying at an altitude that is so high that it is deadly. While the “weather” looks better than in some years there is no guarantee that any of the teams will make it to the summit. And yet, they still try, and there will be others after them that will do the same thing. The human spirit undeterred. We should all think about our own K2, that “mountain” that provides a level of challenge that we barely can conceive of conquering it. And whether we go after it for real, or not, just the process of thinking about something very, very hard is good for our mind and soul. Let’s wish the climbers the best of luck and let’s keep our K2 dream alive – it is what living is all about after all.
Loving life when I summit my K2
