We know the trap; we respond to the urgent and we overlook the important. For as much as we remind ourselves what we should prioritize, it is hard to avoid the pull of the urgent. Yet, we know we cannot live here. We know that to achieve our objectives, to get to our goals, requires that we are driven by what is important and we fill in with the urgent when we can. And yes, while it is easy to state it we probably need to put in place some rules of the road to help us navigate this tough tradeoff. First, we decide on the important and others decide on what is urgent. So, it seems obvious that we have to work on how we lead and avoid following. Second, we need to connect the important with our goals, the urgent rarely, if ever, is. Lastly, let’s figure out that we have agency and it is up to us to guide our journey, the important gets us there and the urgent…..maybe not so much
