Tomorrow, June 16, the Race Across America (RAAM) http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/raam/raam2.php?N_webcat_id=1
starts. The race is considered one of the hardest races around the globe. Competitors in RAAM, which began in 1982, will travel 3,000 miles from Oceanside, California, to Annapolis, Maryland, crossing 12 states and climbing over 170,000 vertical feet. In addition to teams of two, four, and eight, a total of 41 solo riders are included on the 2015 race roster. Solo racers, who will ride 250-to-350 miles per day, will have a maximum of 12 days to complete their journey.
While not a stage race, RAAM is a highly competitive event. The current record for the fastest speed in the event’s history was set in 2014 by Austrian Christoph Strasser, who completed the course in seven days, 15 hours, and 56 minutes. This is insane by any measure. We think that our THPL journey pushes the limits of what is possible. This race just has an insidious nature to it such that it makes the riders do stuff that is so difficult that very few can even comprehend the difficulty. What I like about events and races like this one is that we can romanticize that which is extremely difficult, we can admire it from afar and we can use it to motivate us to do more than we might ordinarily do. When you have a few minutes check out the web site and see how well the racers are doing! I am sure it will be a remarkable experience for all who participate, riders and support crew alike. Go racers, go!
Loving life, when pushing the limits
