It would be logical to conclude that many, if not all, of the THPL community know a lot. It could be about a specific topic, an approach, a technique or just general experience. And this is indeed a very good thing. There is a “trap” in there, though, that comes from having what we know become the defense against progress. We know too much so we figure things about before trying – we know too much so we don’t listen as much as we can – we know too much and it becomes scary thinking about what it would be like to be a beginner again. The circumstances when knowing too much is a hindrance to, growth and learning, can happen all too often and without us realizing that indeed our knowledge, or frame of reference, is holding us back. It is important then to find ways to open our minds to more than we know – to assume little and to embrace that which is different. In so doing we might just be able to avoid the “expert stops learning” and be better for it, even if it means relearning things.
