For the common good

George Washington was once asked what the purpose of government was and he answered, “to serve the needs of the people”. It seems like a reasonable answer and a reason to organize a government rather than all of us working for our own self-interests. As we head into election day (in the U.S.), alas, it seems we have lost our way…. we find ourselves working less and less toward the common good. Partisan has turned into, “something for me”, rather than “offering an alternative” and it is clear we are having a very tough time turning our resources and attention to what is good for all of us (like healthcare, education, and environment). So, rather than give up or give in, let’s role model the behavior we want to see. That is, orient ourselves to respect each other, support each other, help those who are less fortunate, and ensure that we take care of our planet and its limited resources. We can make a difference; let’s start tomorrow with a vote at the ballot box and a higher standard for how we live and operate in the spirit of the common good. Yes indeed!

Loving life when we work towards the common good
