In the past we have written about yogurt as a great food product. It fits the THPL lifestyle – few ingredients, high nutritional value and easy to eat. What is interesting is that the yogurt phenomenon continues to grow. Consumption of yogurt has grown from roughly two pounds in 1975 to about 14 pounds today. What is really interesting, though, is that this amount is far less than other parts of the world. In Germany and France approximately 40 pounds are consumed annually and in Canada 20 pounds per person per year. And so I find it interesting to see how consumption will increase in the US. And the momentum is building to make this happen with some of the yogurt manufacturers not only working on not only getting traditional categories to grow they are looking to new product extensions (innovations) to help grow per capita consumption. Not surprisingly Chobani is pushing the boundaries of Greek yogurt with new products geared towards other parts of the day. The new products include Chobani Greek Yogurt Oats, authentically strained Greek Yogurt mixed with real fruit and whole grain steel-cut oats, Chobani Indulgent, the brand’s first dessert product and a new Chobani Kids product. Sounds like the THPL crowd has some choices to have some fun with.
