We grow up hearing the mantra if at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again. A great rallying cry for the determined or the silly or foolish or maybe just committed. Well after 30 years of attempts a team of Nepalese climbers summited K2 in the winter. Yes, that “Savage Mountain” that thwarted many a climber with her crazy winds, deep snow, extreme temperatures, and an aura of intimidation was summited. Harder by a far margin than summiting Everest it was inspiring to see team after team, year after year, make the attempt and fail. And now in 2021 after the craziest of years, the team made it to the top (and back down to base camp) and one of the last big prizes of mountaineering has been conquered. It should give us all pause as we go after our own K2 in our lives. We need not stop our attempts no matter what the obstacle; time and determination, can indeed conquer all and give us that metaphorical mountain top finish. A good reminder every day that if at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again.
