It is called the longest day of the year, but in fact, the Summer Solstice is still 24 hours, no longer than any other day. What makes this astronomical event special is that this is the day when the sun is at its peak in the sky, and we experience the most amount of daylight in the year in one of the two hemispheres. We feel good about it because it is the beginning of the summer season, and we all feel good on days with more sunlight than otherwise. It is also the turning point when the north starts to move towards winter and while it is warmer and warmer for a while, the sun just starts to stay out less and less. For decades it has been a day-of-notice and we continue to celebrate this unique moment when the planet and the sun do their dance and we start leaning back “the other way” away from the sun. Let’s enjoy the long days of light and the warm evenings of summer as winter is on its way and the cycle continues, indeed it does.
Loving life on the summer solstice
